  • Ricky Martin: "I am a fortunate homosexual man"

    "I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am. "

    So says Grammy winning singer Ricky Martin in a moving letter on his Website. Note, by the way, that Martin did a very cool thing in posting his letter in the original Spanish, and in an English translation. Martin's decision to acknowledge his orientation publicly was spurred by the memoir he's been writing. He notes in the letter that "At this moment I'm feeling the same freedom I usually feel only on stage, without a doubt, I need to share."

    Also note, by the way, that despite assertions elsewhere, Martin was not "living in the closet," he simply responded to impertinent questions about his sex life with polite refusals to respond.

    David Badash notes on the The New Civil Rights site That Dan Savage is more than a little hypocritical:

    Dan Savage is using anti-gay slurs to insult the same people who are targeting the LGBTQ community. And that is unacceptable.

    He's talking about Dan Savage, the queer sex positive journalist at Seattle's The Stranger, using pejorative names for QLTBG folk as insulting labels for non-queers. More specifically, these are the titles of two Dan Savage blog posts this week:

    "Ken Cuccinelli Is a Fag."

  • Citibank and Fabulis Followup: Citibank Not so Fabulis

    A lot of Websites, print publications, and blogs picked up the story about Citibank denying fabulisfabulisa Gay social networking site access to the company's own bank accounts. I wrote about it here. There's interesting coverage from the Wall Street Journal here. In an update to the Fabulis blog, Jason Goldberg, the founder and CEO of Fabulis notes "a compliance officer at Citibank did a review of the fabulis website and blog and marked it as porn!"

  • Roy Ashburn: I'm Gay

    "I'm gay," State Senator Roy Ashburn told a radio host from his central California district in an interview this morning. "Those are the words that have been so difficult for me for so long."

    Ashburn said in the interview that he repeatedly voted against gay rights because he was representing the views of his conservative constituents.

    I have a best friend of ten years, this month we have had sex for the first time. He has this new girlfriend. We got in a little arguement and in so many words he said he wanted to give her a chance before we got any tighter. Now our friendship is ruined, I have told him how I felt and offered to be in an open relationship. Now what?

    California state senator Roy Ashburn Roy AshburnRoy Ashburnwas pulled over by the California Highway Patrol at about 2:00 a.m. on March 3 when California Highway Patrol officers noticed that the senator's state-issued car was being driven erratically. Senator Ashburn had previously been at Faces, a gay nightclub that's been in business and a center for queer culture in Sacramento since the 1980s. Ashburn was placed under arrest for driving under the influence with a blood alcohol level higher than .08%. His unidentified male passager was not charged.
